First Annual Venom Banquet...

- June 4, 2006

Most Valuable Player

The MVP award is for the best performing member of the team.  The player who contributed the most to the team offensively and defensively.  This year MVP is not only extremely talented, but is one of the sweetest girls we have.  When she joined the Venom, she couldn’t make a lay-up to save her life.  Actually, when I recruited her, people were asking me why.  Because she was so dedicated and determined to learn, she is now the most talked about player in the state.  This year’s MVP is like a silent assassin, she is quiet and reserved, but on the court, she is deadly!  Our Most Valuable Player is Promise “FLASH” Amukamara.

Special Thanks for All Donations

Special thank you to Anthony Robinson for his donation that help the Venom buy their first set of uniforms.

A special thanks for all the donations received from various companies.

Eight awards were given in 7 categories.  All coaches were involved in the selection for each award.  The purpose of the awards is to acknowledge the hard work and encourage every member of the team to become the best they can be.

Here are the recipients:

Most Valuable Offensive Player

The Most Valuable Offensive Player award is for the player who helped the team put the most points on the board.  This player has great one-on-one skills, can score inside and outside, and isn’t afraid to take the tough shots when needed.  Every team needs a scorer, someone we can rely on when we need to score.  This award was tough for us.  We couldn’t decide on only one so we selected two.  Our Most Valuable Offensive Players are Ashton Bourdon and Cory Williams.

Most Valuable Defensive Player

The Most Valuable Defensive Player is for the player who helped us shut down the competition.  The player who caused the most turn-overs for the opposing teams.  Defense is all about heart!  Defense is about how much you want to stop your opponent.  This year’s MVDP is quick, understands team defense, and is always helping her teammates.  We all know that offense wins games, but defense wins championships!  Our Most Valuable Defensive Player is Tevis Spiva.

Most Improved Player

The Most Improve Player award goes to the player who made the greatest improvement overall.  This player improved every aspect of her game to the point that she is now a big factor in the success of the team.  What is really scary is that she is extremely athletic, but doesn’t really know how to use it yet!  This year’s winner has come from zero basketball knowledge to become the best rebounded and shot blocker we have…even if she is totally girly!  The Most Improved Player is Nici Richardson.

Hustle Award

The Hustle Award goes to the player who always has a hand in everything when she is on the court.  She is always involved in jump balls, helps on defense, gets the rebounds, the steals, and will be the first one down the court on the fast break.  Sometimes she goes a little too fast and will run right into the person she is guarding, but it is not intentional!  She always gets into foul trouble because she is aggressive and she is everywhere!  Her intensity is greatly appreciated.  Our Hustle Award goes to Dominique Wilkins.

Coaches’ Award

The Coaches’ Award goes to the player who always comes to practice ready to learn something.  She asked questions, and is always ready to apply herself in doing every drill the right way.  This player never complains about teammates, or how hard practice is.  Rarely do we ever have to correct her and when we do, she immediately makes the adjustments.  Her dedication will take her a long way.  Our Coaches’ Award  goes to Catie Barr.

Team Spirit Award

The Team Spirit Award goes to the player who is the most positive and the most inspirational on the team.  This player never misses practice, always works hard, and does it with a smile!  She is the first one to cheer on her team even when she is not playing!  Her great attitude is contagious and every team needs someone like her.  Of course, she has practically blown all of our drums out by yelling so much, but every one loves her.  Our Team Spirit Award goes to Melanie Walsh.

Special Thanks...

Coaches Special Thanks

I want to say thank you to my two coaches Juanita Mebane and Marvin Stanford.  They put in long hours for peanuts, and a few free t-shirts!  They definitely don’t do it for the money, but they do it for the love of the game and the joy they get our of watching the girls improve everyday.  They invested their time and money , and can’t imagine working with anyone else.  I would have never been able to do on my own.  They are great coaches and amazing people.  I want to say thank you for your contribution to the Venom organization.

Parents Special Thanks

I want to say thank you to all the parents who drove the girls to practices and games...who sat in the gym week after week watching them play in tournaments...who cheered them on when we were not that good...and who stuck with me when we had 7 players and we didn’t know if we were going to have a team.

The dedication of the coaches and the determination of the players would not matter if we did have the support of the parents.  I want to say to all of you parents, thank you for your contribution to the success of the organization.

The Venom had their 1st Annual Banquet on Sunday.  The evening was to celebrate the success of the Venom Club and a wonderful year together.  The evening was filled with awards, guest speakers, and special thanks for all the support we received this year.
