It's all about the game!

2009 AAU Sophomore National Champions!

Orlando, FL - July 9, 2009

The third game was against the Knoxville Panthers. We suffered our first loss of the tournament with a score of 68 to 44. In the first 10 minutes of the game our girls already had 10 fouls to the other teams 3.  Frustration and foul trouble definitely made it difficult for the girls to overcome the deficit in the score.  Unforced turnovers and missed lay-ups also played a big role in the loss. Promise was the only player to score in double figures with 10 points.  Despite being in foul trouble, Megan managed to have 5 blocks, 4 rebounds and 4 steals.  Losing to the Panthers had dropped us from 1st place in our pool to 3rd place overall in the pool.  Our placement in the pool determined how we would be seeded in the bracket play to the championship game.

Our tournament seeding landed us in a game against the favored home team the Florida Wildcats.  Our girls were thirsty for a win after suffering their first loss the previous day.  They came on strong right away and maintained the lead through out the game to eventually win 71 to 60.  Promise proved to be too much for the Wildcats to handle, she finished the game with 30 points, 8 rebounds, 4 steals and 2 blocks.  Strong post play from Megan Mullings, Kristin Pettit and Cece Pearl also contributed to the win. Megan finished with 12 points and 7 rebounds, Kristin with 4 points, 8 rebounds and 5 blocks, while Cece added 2rebounds and one block of her own.

Game 5 was a rematch with the Georgia Elite whom we previously had beaten in overtime during pool play.  We did not want another close game.  The game plan was to come on strong right away with tough in your face defense and to utilize our speed with the fast break.  It proved to be a successful strategy and we won 61 to 47.  Peace was the highest scorer of the game with 15 points and 4 steals.  Coco Makil finished strongly with 10 points while Promise added 11 points of her own.  Again defense was a key factor in the win. We also shot well sinking 5 3-pointers 2 of which came from Tevis Spiva.

Overall the girls played extremely well throughout the tournament. Tournament standouts were the Amukamara sisters who proved to be a powerful backcourt duo with Promise averaging 18.2 pts, 8 rebounds and 4.4 steals per game while Peace averaged 9.4 pts, 2 rebounds, and 3.2 steals per game.  Our strong and quick backcourt consisting of Megan Mullings, Cece Pearl, Coco Makil and Kristen Pettit also proved that they were a force to be reckoned with. Daesha Jackson, Tevis Spiva and Alex Parris proved to be the standouts in their own right with some awesome hustle plays, 3 pt shooting and strong defense!

Great job to our Champions!

For our first time participating in the AAU National tournament, we did really well winning 4 out of 5 games to take first place.

We won our first game vs. Orlando’s Finest with a score of 63 to 50.  Promise Amukamara who started out a little slower in the first half, emerged in the 2nd half to finish the game with 24 points, 8 rebounds and 4 steals.  Up and coming post player Kristin Pettit added 11 points, 8 rebounds and 2 steals. Megan Mullings was also a dominant force on defense and finished the game with 6 blocks, 10 points, 4 rebounds and 3 steals.

Our second match up was against the Georgia Elite.  We won the game with a score of 63 to 61 in overtime.  Perseverance and tough defense was a big factor in winning the game.  Daesha Jackson and Tevis Spiva stood out through out the game with their defensive pressure along with some key hustle plays.  Coco Makil also did a great job on defense and took advantage of her keen ability to drive through the lane to get to the basket. Promise had a strong showing with 17 points, 6 rebounds and 7 steals.  Younger sister Peace Amukamara chipped in 15 points and 4 steals.  Megan also played well adding 9 points, 5 rebounds and 3 steals to help cap the win.
